![]() While Onestar is doing what he thinks is best for himself, and his own reputation, he's horrendously selfish and cowardly. ![]() Leopardstar did what she thought was good for her clan but obviously went about it in a terrible way. While Onestar straight-up knows what he's doing is wrong, deludes himself, and somehow is still given everything on a silver platter, why? There are so many outside forces trying to justify his actions, when they aren't justifiable in the least, and are just downright stupid, hunh? Combine this with the god-awful pacing, it just comes off as a jumbled butchered mess of an SE, I feel like this book will be such a headache to read word for word later. It's a well set up, well executed little story with some fun little details - in particular you get the impression that Abnett really enjoys writing armour clashes. The story in the book itself is straightforward enough - a rescue mission of a holy site with a ticking clock of an enemy fleet approaching, and Gaunt's career hanging in the balance. ![]() More than that though, Honour Guard quietly sets in motion a lot of the story to The Saint arc, introducing characters and themes which are successfully referred back to again and again over the next four novels. There's something about the setting of 40k in the space Himalayas, prayer flags and all, that scratches a particular itch in my brain. Honour Guard is probably no one's favourite entry in the Gaunt's Ghosts series, but for me it's definitely one of my top five. ![]() ![]() On an incredible wedding night, a storm leaves the island in the darkness, and something goes wrong on the island when someone turns up dead. This was a marvelous job, what the author did with the atmosphere of the story and how she was able to make that house look like a suspicious character. I swear every time Hal went up those attic stairs, I would get a chill. It was incredible how the author was able to make that house look so alive. ![]() The estate where everything happens was, for me, a character as much as Hal was. I most enjoyed the atmosphere of the novel. I do plan to read her other books, but for now, this one holds the prize for best book by Ruth Ware. Westaway.Įven though I gave it the same rating as The Woman in Cabin 10, I can say, confidently, that this is now my favorite book of the author. ![]() I didn’t really know what I would think of this book, so I was delighted to see that the author wrote a very good story in The Death of Mrs. I really enjoyed the first one I read ( The Woman in Cabin 10) and the second was mysterious enough to keep me interested but it didn’t wow me ( The Lying Game). This is the third book I read by Ruth Ware. ![]() |
